Case Filed Against Bayer for All That Yaz

On January 24, 2011, the Mass Torts Unit of Searcy Denney filed yet another individual lawsuit in Palm Beach County, Florida on behalf of a client harmed by ingestion of Bayer’s beleaguered Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills.

This latest civil claim was filed on behalf of a 39 year old Boynton Beach woman who took Yaz for more than two years.  She suffered a pulmonary embolus in December of 2009, which her physicians attributed to use of these oral contraceptives.

Studies have shown that Yaz and Yasmin, as well as the generic Ocella, are associated with a higher incidence of blood clot injuries (such as heart attacks, strokes, deep vein thromboses, and pulmonary emboli) than the risks associated with other birth control drugs that carry the same warning labels.  Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella are “fourth generation” birth control products that contain the unique progestin drospirenone, which is touted as a diuretic but may also contribute to the higher incidence of blood clots associated with use of the drugs as well as other complications including gallbladder disease, sudden cardiac death, and hyperkalemia.
