The Mass Tort unit has filed an additional lawsuit in South Florida against Bayer Corporation, the manufacturer of Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills.

This individual lawsuit was filed on behalf of a police officer who suffered a heart attack in April of 2009.  The forty-three year old plaintiff and her physicians were unaware that patients who ingest Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella (the generic version) face far greater risks of suffering blood clot-related injuries, such as:

  • Heart attacks
  • Strokes
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Pulmonary emboli

These risk are substantially higher than the risks associated with other birth control products on the market.

In August of 2009, two studies were published in the British Medical Journal documenting this higher risk associated with use of birth control products containing the unique progestin drospirenone.  Unfortunately, the drugs have been permitted to remain on the market in the United States and continue to subject unsuspecting women and girls to unacceptable risks of harm.
